Mathieu Neuville was previously one of the Team Peugeot TotalEnergies performance engineers and will be, for the 2024 season, the new race engineer of the #93 PEUGEOT 9X8.

A new challenge awaits the French-Belgian that told us a bit more about his career and his job as an engineer.

Can tell us more about you?

“I’m Mathieu Neuville, I’m 38 years old and I was born in Brittany, France. As my parents are Belgian, I have the dual-nationality, which is very important for me. I studied at the ESTACA, a French engineering school and then I did a master degree in aerodynamism in Southampton, England.

“Before joining Peugeot Sport I worked with Toyota Motorsport on their LMP1 project, and I stopped when they started their Hypercar project. I started with them in the aerodynamic sector, wind tunnel and then moved to track aerodynamics to finish as performance engineer.”

Could you explain what your job consists of?

“At Peugeot Sport, because the team is smaller, I started directly as performance engineer, also working in aerodynamics and development.

“The goal of a performance engineer is to take care of all the technical aspects of the performance of the car, meaning the setup, the tools that we need on track and to develop some of those tools. On a shorter term, the job is also to find performance, so which items we should develop on the car to make it quicker. During practices or a race, the goal is to run the car and make sure that the reliability aspects related to our department are working as they should. We evaluate all the details to improve the car thanks to the feedback of the drivers and our knowledge of the car.”

How did you become a race engineer and what are the differences with a performance engineer?

“I’m very new to this job for now. The race engineer has a more global view than the performance engineer. He is helped by performance engineers as well as the mechanics, the system engineers and even the physio! The race engineer is supervising all the aspect of performance with the help of all the other departments and team members. It’s a less technical job as there is an important part of management and organisation but we are still engineers!

“After working ten years focused 100% on the technical aspect, I was motivated by the human side of motorsport, with some management, making sure that everyone is working well together…while still keeping an eye on the technical side.

“It’s been now several months that I’m getting ready for this new job as race engineer, to see how it’s done, and observe my predecessor…the good thing is that as performance engineer, we are very close to the race engineer so it will help me a lot in this new opportunity.”

Mathieu Neuville will start his new duties during the FIA WEC Prologue in Qatar, held just before the first race of the season on the 1st and 2nd March.
