Mikkel Jensen, driver of the PEUGEOT 9X8 #93 in FIA WEC for Team Peugeot TotalEnergies had a busy season driving all over the world, as he was also involved in an IMSA program in LMP2 with TDS Racing. Despite a tough season, the podium at Monza brought some positive notes for the Danish and youngest driver of the team. In this interview, Mikkel Jensen is walks us through his season before heading into 2024.
Could you summarise your season with Team Peugeot TotalEnergies for us?
“The return to a full season in FIA WEC for Team Peugeot TotalEnergies has been very challenging. Not everything went as expected but everyone has kept working hard and it’s great to see the motivation of the mechanics, the engineers, the whole team, even on bad days. Everyone is always smiling, happy, the team spirit is amazing which is super important through tough times.”
“It was also very special to bring the PEUGEOT 9X8 to Le Mans for the first time and the podium in Monza was definitely the highlight of the season for me.”
You had a double program this season with IMSA (TDS Racing) and FIA WEC, how do you manage to race in two different championships, with two different cars, all over the world?
“It’s actually quite easy! My career the past five years has been all over the place, so I’m used to driving several different cars in one season, the swap between the LMP2 and the Hypercar was not so difficult. Obviously, it’s good that we have some sim sessions with PEUGEOT before every race so it allows you to get used to all the buttons, the procedures…because the Hypercar is way more sophisticated and has way more functions than the LPM2. The LMP2 is more start and go, more simple than the Hypercar. It’s very different but in the end a race car is a race car, and the main thing is to drive as fast as possible!”
What was your favourite moment of your 2023 season with Team Peugeot TotalEnergies?
“I think being at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, racing for the overall win was one of my favourite moments of the season with Team Peugeot TotalEnergies. Being there with a French team, a French manufacturer, feeling the support from the fans the whole week, it was very special and amazing. And, as a short moment, of course the podium at Monza was one of the top moments of my season.”
Mikkel Jensen will be back at the wheel of the PEUGEOT 9X8 for the FIA WEC Prologue and the first race of the season in February 2024 in Qatar. But before that, he and all the team will be focused on working hard to be ready for the 2024 season and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
