Qualified on the ninth row of the starting grid, the PEUGEOT 9X8s defended their positions in the Hypercar pack. Paul Di Resta gained one position on the opening lap, while Loïc Duval, overtaken by three competitors, quickly fought back to 18th place.
Shortly before the first hour of the race, Paul was caught off guard by a GT3 car in traffic at the Porsche Curves and had no choice but to run into the gravel. The #93 had to return to the pits for a front and rear hood change, completed impressively fast by the Team Peugeot TotalEnergies.
Paul Di Resta completed 29 laps (400 km) on the same set of medium-compound tires before being replaced by Jean-Eric Vergne in the #93. Mikkel Jensen then took over for a massive triple stint, lasting over three hours and covering more than 500 km. The PEUGEOT #93 is fighting to get back on the lead lap.
After a double stint on medium tires, Loïc handed over the #94 to Malthe Jakobsen, who briefly took the race lead during the pit stop cycle. Stoffel Vandoorne followed after his own double stint. The PEUGEOT #94 is on a strategy of 13 laps per stint—one lap more than most Hypercars.
Jean-Marc Finot, Senior VP of Stellantis Motorsport
“We built our strategy based on our race pace. We chose to extend the stints, which saved us one pit stop after six hours of racing. That’s a positive for the #94, which is now just behind the pole-sitting car. Thanks to the offset pit stops, it has even led the race a few times, which is always great for team morale and for our PEUGEOT fans. As for the #93, there was a misunderstanding with a GT3. The team responded very quickly—in about twenty seconds—but the ill-timed Slow Zones and Safety Cars set us back.”
Stoffel Vandoorne (PEUGEOT 9X8 #94)
“I did my first double stint in the race. We’re on a slightly different strategy with one extra lap per stint, hoping that in the end, we’ll spend less time in the pits than our rivals… We hope this strategy will pay off.”
Paul Di Resta (PEUGEOT 9X8 #93)
“My first stint was OK apart from going into the gravel trap. That GT3 was right in the middle of the track at the Porsche Curves, and to avoid it, I lost the rear… It’s my fault, but in our position, we have to take some risks.”
Malthe Jakobsen (PEUGEOT 9X8 #94)
“Loïc did a good job at the start. We’re managing the medium tires well so far. Our position varies from P6 to P15 because of our offset refueling strategy. Our competitors are faster, but they have to stop more often for fuel. We’ll see how it ends.”
