AFTER AN ENCOURAGING START TO THE RACE, TEAM PEUGEOT TOTALENERGIES FINISHES OUTSIDE THE POINTS IN BARCELONA

  • The second-to-last round of the FIA World Endurance Championship took place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
  • The two PEUGEOT 9X8s finish 12th and 13th in the Spanish round
  • The FIA WEC will conclude in three weeks’ time at Monza for the eighth round of the 2026 season

The FIA World Endurance Championship held its second-to-last round of the season this weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. For Team Peugeot TotalEnergies, the event, held in changing conditions, provided another opportunity to assess the potential of the PEUGEOT 9X8 on a circuit known to be demanding. Despite a final result below the team’s expectations, the Spanish round provided valuable learnings.

Just minutes before the start, rain added an extra challenge to the opening stages of the race. With no previous reference on a wet track, the competitors had to adapt quickly to tricky conditions. Despite an additional formation lap, incidents multiplied during the opening laps. Starting from 15th and 17th on the grid respectively, Loïc Duval in the PEUGEOT 9X8 #94 and Paul Di Resta in the PEUGEOT 9X8 #93 began to move up the order.

Despite reduced visibility and two race neutralizations, both drivers quickly gained several positions. After one hour of racing, Paul Di Resta climbed as high as sixth. Benefiting from a slightly offset strategy, the Scotsman even found himself leading the race for a few moments. The gradual improvement in conditions then allowed both PEUGEOT 9X8s to switch to slick tyres, as the track gradually dried up through to the chequered flag.

While fighting for a place in the top 10, the PEUGEOT 9X8 #93 found itself one lap behind the leaders following a race neutralization that occurred just over two hours before the finish. The trio of Paul Di Resta, Nick Cassidy and Alex Quinn eventually crossed the finish line in 12th place. Their teammates Loïc Duval, Malthe Jakobsen and Théo Pourchaire finished just behind them in 13th.

For Alex Quinn, the team’s new arrival, this race provided a valuable opportunity to discover the demands of a FIA WEC race weekend alongside Team Peugeot TotalEnergies. The British was therefore able to further develop his understanding of driving an Hypercar in race conditions.

Following this round at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the FIA World Endurance Championship will conclude at Monza. At the “Temple of Speed”, where the PEUGEOT 9X8 made its FIA WEC debut in 2022, the entire team will be determined to end the season on a positive note.

Emmanuel Esnault, Team Principal – Team Peugeot TotalEnergies

“The conditions at the start of the race gave us some good overtaking opportunities and allowed us to stay in the fight, with both cars making encouraging progress through the field. When the track dried, we returned to a position more in line with our current level of performance.

The result is undoubtedly frustrating as points seemed within our reach, but above all, we are taking away the positive momentum we saw throughout the weekend. Finally, Alex’s integration is a real source of satisfaction: he immediately settled into the team and demonstrated his speed, maturity and ability to adapt. We are now focused on the final round, which will take place in Monza on 8 November.”

Nick Cassidy (PEUGEOT 9X8 #93)

“I had a good stint today and felt comfortable in the car straight away. I think we got the maximum out of our package in the conditions we had. Unfortunately, a race neutralization cost us a lap to the leaders, which took us out of the fight for the top 10. It is obviously frustrating, as we had been in the fight up to that point. Overall, considering the characteristics of this track, which are not the most favorable for our car, we can take several positives from this weekend. We will obviously analyze this race and I think we will come back stronger in Monza, a circuit that should better suit the strengths of our car.”

Loïc Duval (PEUGEOT 9X8 #94)

“The start was really difficult because of the visibility, but I was able to avoid the incidents. The pace was quite good on the soaked track and even when we switched to slick tyres after two hours. Unfortunately, we suffered from tyre degradation on this circuit, which is particularly demanding in this respect. From then on, we were lacking a little pace compared with the frontrunners, but it is encouraging nonetheless.”
